Robert
C. Scofield grew up in Lake Placid, New York and attended Northwood
School where he was an avid skier. After graduation, he attended
Allegheny College, studied for a year at the Sorbonne in Paris, and
returned to the United States to complete his education at The School of
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. He also earned
his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University in 1966.
For
the following twenty-six years Robert was the Head of Arts at Moses
Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island. Over the years he taught
three dimensional design, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and art
history. His well-rounded and supportive approach to teaching art
to his students caused many young people to explore the world of art
both inside and outside the classroom. Additionally Robert
initiated a Cultural Enrichment Program for the upper school students at
Moses Brown. The idea was to expose young people to a wide range
of cultural offerings in an urban environment.
After
working in marble and granite, Robert started working with burls on the
side. Gradually this medium took over his studio. At this
time many of the burl pieces were functional bowls, all of which were
hand carved.
Robert's
approach to his work is one of discovery and listening. "I
take the initial idea from the organic qualities that are intrinsic to
the piece of wood. I go where the burl leads me, imposing my will
only to enhance the original form or design. I rely on intuition
to be my guide. I work best when I am not trying to make
'art'. Accessing the inner child's clarity and freshness of
vision, joy of discovery and making work into play is for me a central
goal."
Robert's
work is in collections throughout the United States. His pieces
include bowls, sculpture, jewelry, wall sconces and chandeliers.
Robert divides his time between his studios in Lake Placid, New York and
on Maneskootuk Island, Rangeley, Maine.
